1776, Nov 8 - YOHOGANIA (extinct), MONONGALIA (W.Va.) and OHIO (W.Va.) created by Virginia from West Augusta District; YOHOGANIA (extinct), MONONGALIA (W.Va.) and OHIO (W.Va.) overlapped territory claimed by Pennsylvania in WESTMORELAND, WASHINGTON and FAYETTE. (Cappon, Petchenik, and Long, 93; Hening, 9:262-274)

1776 - Military Service: Jesse Ellis Tour of Duty at Holidays Cove

In a deposition before the court of Adams County, Ohio on 11 Aug 1835, Jesse Ellis described his service in the militia as such:

That he entered service of the United State as follows in the year of Seventeen hundred and Seventysix he volunteered as a Soldier out of Captain Robert Sackenau's Company of Militia then of Virginia, Brooks County, [Brooke County wasn't founded until 1797. In 1776, Holidays Cove was in Yohogania County, VA.] and performed a Tour of Duty of Six Month under the Command of Captain Mathew Richey and Ensign Ebenezer Corn and Rendevoused at the fort Holidays Cove on the Bank of the Ohio River in Brook County We was kept these at that fort as gards of siad fort and in Defence of the familys in said fort the family who was forted in said fort was Harman Greathouse and family Ezekial Barnett and family Capt Richey and family and several others now that Recollected We Remained at said for Holadays Cove Six month I entered this six month tour of duty the first day April in the year 1776 and was discharged the fourth day of October following.

Court met in pursuant to adjournment Oct 29th 1777

William McMahan vs John Greathouse. In Case Then came the parties and at the request of Plff Ordered that this Suit be dismissed.

1778, Mar 25 - Yohogania County Court: Administrator appointed for estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased:

John Greathouse is appointed Administrator of Daniel Greathouse deceased he complying with the Law, Whereupon the said John Came into Court with Thos Cook and Samuel Smith his Securities, entered into Bond and Oath accordingly.

Ordered that Nathaniel Tomblinson, Benjamin Tomblinson, John Baxter and Edmund Baxter or any three of them appraise the Estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased to make report to next Court.

Analysis:

An administrator being appointed for the estate of Daniel Greathouse, deceased, suggests that he would have died shortly before 25 Mar 1778, therefore his death would have probably occurred in Mar 1778.

A John Greathouse being appointed as the administrator of Daniel Greathouse, deceased, could suggest that John would have been a brother of the deceased, however John's relationship to the deceased was not stated in the court record.

Jury Duty: John Greathouse served on a jury:

Benjamin Vantre, John Custar, James Ellison, Pierce Noland, William Marshall, Sen; William Marshall Jun, John Munn, John Greathouse, Robert Henderson & John Morrison; who say that the Prisoner is Not Guilty.

1778, Sep 28 - Yohogania County Court: Administrator for estate of Daniel Greathouse revoked, Mary Greathouse widow of deceased appointed as administrator.

Ordered that the administration of the Estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased formerly to John Greathouse be revoked and that the same be granted to Mary Greathouse the widow of the said Deceased, she having complied with the Law. Ordered that Edmond Polk, James Campbell, Richard Boyce, & Richard Elson or any three of them being first Sworn do appraise the Personal Estate and Slaves if any of the Estate of Daniel Greathouse deceased and make return to Next Court.

Isaac Greathouse Locates 398 Acres of Land Surveyed for David Bradford Atto. Assignee of Jno. Sappn. - Which Land Not being returned. to the Register's office by sd Bradford According to Law is become liable to be reented. And Which Said Greathouse Locates on Warrt. No. 1777. dated 28" day of June 1782. for 400 acres. & is Recd. in the Office. - August 10th. 1785.
